âMy Sister Fell Offâ
THE ESMONDS ate their lunchâhot pot and treacle puddingâat a speed which their father told them was barbaric, and afterwards they rushed out to the stables to saddle their ponies. No one did much grooming, and only Tina bothered to put on all her riding clothes.
It was with some trepidation that they mounted and rode up the drive: the ponies were very fresh after their long spell in the stables; they refused to stand still, they jogged and pranced, they bumped their quarters into each other and argued which should lead the way.
âDo behave sensibly, Frosty,â said Julian. âReally, any one might think you were a silly three-year-old.â
âItâs all right; itâs only the wheelbarrow,â said Tina in soothing tones to October, who was shying at almost everything.
âNow, Delight,â said Charlotte, âyouâll only fall down if you fool about in this silly way.â
âSteady,â said Lewis to Solomon.
âWhat is the matter with you all?â asked Paul. âDonât you like your horses to have a bit of life in them? I believe youâd feel safer on worn-out hirelings.â
âWe wouldnât,â said Julian.
âOctoberâs never like a hireling,â said Tina, âand surely a person can talk to her horse without you interfering.â
âThereâs a big difference between being fresh and being silly,â said Charlotte.
âAt least we donât need standing martingales,â said Lewis.
âThatâs only because the Turkâs keen,â said Paul.
âSolomonâs only a half-bred so heâs bound to be quieter. Thoroughbreds are much the most difficult to ride.â
âThatâs what you think,â said Lewis.
âItâs a well-known fact,â replied Paul.
âYouâre a conceited idiot,â said Lewis, unable to think of a better reply.
âWell, youâre a cautious grandmother,â answered Paul.
âFor goodnessâ sake, shut up,â said Charlotte. âWe havenât been able to ride for ages because of the beastly weather and then, when at last we can, you do your best to spoil it by arguing exactly as though you were at school.â
âOf course you never argue,â said Paul, letting the jogging Turk break into a brisk trot. The Turk was feeling very fresh and, wearing the jointed snaffle in which Paul always rode him, because double bridles and Pelhams were âsuch a bore to clean,â he pulled the whole time. Paulâs arms felt as though they were being pulled out of their sockets; to ease them, he gave the Turk his head.
âWhatâs the hurry?â shouted Lewis from behind.
âAre you trying to catch a train?â inquired Charlotte.
Paul pulled up the unwilling Turk. âDo come on,â he shouted. âWhatâs the matter with you?â
âWe donât want to ruin our horsesâ legs,â said Charlotte.
âIf they canât stand up to a perfectly ordinary trot theyâre not much use,â said Paul. âFeeble animals,â he added contemptuously.
âOctober isnât feeble,â said Tina furiously, âbut Iâm not going to make him have swelled legs.â
âIf youâre going to be such a beastly nuisance youâd better go for a ride by yourself,â said Lewis to Paul.
âSteady, October, steady,â said Tina to October, who, startled by Extraâs sudden appearance from a hedge, had bounded forward with a buck. âYou are a beastly dog,â Tina told him, putting her feet into her stirrups and straightening her crash cap.
